The handlebars can be rotated laterally by loosening the 6mm bolt visible in the top of the handlebar pin when the bars are folded. Depending on the age of your bike, the handlebar support pin could be one of two types.
Older model bikes used an expanding cone system to apply pressure to the fork steerer and stop the handlebars from turning independently. However, from late 2018 onwards, this design was changed to a sliding wedge system which improved on the original design.
The change in design also means a change in the torque values applied to the fixing bolt for both pin types. Old values shown before 2018 should now be disregarded.
It is critical that the correct torque value is applied to the appropriate handlebar pin type. The following values should be applied:
Brompton strongly recommends that the Handlebar pin is inspected and adjusted by an authorised Brompton dealer who has the correct tools to successfully perform this task. Failure to correctly tighten the forks may result in damaged components or accident and injury.
