Swapping handlebars to a different design prevents folding the bicycle and also affects the safety of the brakes and gears.
Why is this? - The bicycle is designed to fold up into a small package. If the Brompton handlebars are swapped for others which are wider, or the wrong shape, they will hit the ground when you fold up the bike. Swapping to a different handlebar design would also require changing the brake and gear cables.
The length of these cables needs is very specific, to within just 5mm. approx. so that when the bicycle is folded up they do not tangle or crimp. More importantly, if changing a handlebar causes the cables to become too short then the safety is affected- the brakes could ‘pull’ when you do not expect it.
There are three different types of handlebars Brompton bicycle offers which gives different riding positions. Each different riding position has its own design of handlebar stem twinned with its own handlebar. eg, the H-Type has a more upright riding position allowing hands to rest higher compared to the S-Type which puts the rider’s hands more forward and lower. Each type still folds up to the same size in the same way.
It is straightforward for riders of different heights to ride our bicycles without needing to change the handlebars. This is one by adjusting the saddle height and the saddle position. Bromptons are in use by riders across a height range of 140cm (4‘7”) to over 203cm (6’8”).
